Pampering Campers
CHILKAT STATE PARK
Chilkat State Park is 7 miles south of Haines, Alaska, on Mud Bay Road.
Setting:
Chilkat State Park sits in a mixed forest of evergreens and deciduous trees at the edge of Chilkat Inlet. The inlet is
not visible from the campground but a boat launch and log cabin visitor center is nearby.
Facility:
This quiet little campground has 15
gravel sites. Each has a picnic table
and fire ring. The host is located at the
log cabin visitor's center. There are
vault toilets and drinking water
available in the campground.
Camping Tips:
June. The visitor centers offers incredible views of Chilkat Inlet, Rainbow, and
Davidson glaciers. The center also has wildlife spotting scopes so you can spot
the inlet wildlife, such as seals, porpoises, and whales. Visitors have even been
able to spy on bears and mountain goats on the other side of the inlet.
There are three trails in the park. Seduction Point Trail is an easy hike that
follows the coast, winding back and forth between the woods and the beach. This
trail is six miles long one way, and offers great scenery and wildlife viewing
opportunities. Battery Point Trail is another easy trail along the beach. For those
ready for a challenge, there is the Mount Riley Trail. This trail has quite a bit of
vertical rise to it, but the reward is a sensational view of the entire area.
Getting there: Head south out of Haines on Mud Bay Road (it's not as bad as it sounds). It is
well signed. Just stay on the well travelled road which is mostly paved.
Workamping at Chilkat State Park:
A camphost at Chilkat gets to stay in the log cabin visitor's center! This
is mostly a caretaker position to watch over the campground, talk to
visitors and help them spot wildlife and glaciers from the center.
Cleaning restrooms is not required but I'm sure they'd accept your help.
You will work closely with the park rangers. Contact Alaska State Parks
for possible openings.
