with four salmon runs, starting in mid-June and ending in
mid-October. Because of the salmon spawning in the river and at
this end of the lake, this area is also a bear highway. Bears come
down from the tundra to feast on the salmon. It is against Alaska
law to leave out anything associated with food: coolers, utensils,
pots/pans. Put them in your car or hard-sided RV when you are
not using them. Give the bears plenty of room and immediately
report any that are aggressive or are eating people food from a
campsite. Eagles are also prevalent in the area so be sure to
bring your binoculars and camera!
Getting there: From the Alaska Marine Ferry, turn right. Go up the Chilkoot River to the lake
and campground. From downtown Haines, take the Lutak and Chilkoot River roads, or five
miles past the ferry terminal.
Workamping at Chilkoot Lake State Park:
A camphost at Chilkoot gets one of the best sites in the
park! This is mostly a caretaker position to watch over the
campground and keep it tidy. Cleaning restrooms is not
required but I'm sure they'd accept your help. You will work
closely with the park rangers. Contact Alaska State Parks
for possible openings.
