This is the first time I've seen pelicans standing on the beach. They were at the end of Deep Creek with a bunch of their seagull buddies. The white headed ones are adults and the others are immature. We took a drive down the Siletz River later in the day; from Toledo to Hwy 101. Lots of fall colors! We stopped to look at the ocean at Boiler Bay just before the fog rolled in. We spotted a whale spout! We watched him come right down the beach towards us! He was probably only 30 feet out from the rocks at the overlook when he spouted and turned around. He was at the surface long enough for us to take a couple pictures. But with the fog and bright sun blinding us, you can't see him in the pic. But that was the closest we've seen one - how COOL is that!!
